Message from the founder.

Mark Scanlon

Chief Executive Officer

After many years working with businesses across rural and regional Australia, I saw first-hand how complex, and often challenging succession can be. Through founding and building Next Rural over more than 15 years, I had the privilege of working closely with farming families and family businesses navigating some of life’s most important decisions around transition, ownership, and legacy. As the needs of the family-run business evolved beyond the agricultural sector, so too did our business - leading to the evolution of Next Transition Group.

As a Chartered Accountant with experience at leading international firms, including KPMG and Grant Thornton, I developed a strong understanding of the technical side but also recognized that the real challenges often lie beyond it.

Too often, succession planning focuses on structures and documentation, while the human element is overlooked. That’s where things can break down.

I started Next Transition Group to address that gap. Our focus is on helping families and business owners navigate transition in a way that brings clarity, structure and alignment, while preserving what matters most: relationships, legacy and long-term continuity.

Successful succession is not going to be achieved in one family meeting; it’s a journey that can take years – and usually some very frank discussions – to accomplish. To maintain family harmony and legacy they need to start early and have the right travelling companion to ensure they are all singing from the same song sheet, he says.
